Ever since Dale and I were married, we have loved to go and explore. Often after a busy week of teaching we would spend our weekend driving around to explore our new territory. We would see a mountain in the distance and just start driving, taking random roads that we thought would lead us in the right direction. Sometimes we would find dead-ends, and yet other times we would find perfect hidden gems.
From day dot, our kids have been strapped into their car seats and dragged along with us. We like to think that they enjoy the time too and that it isn’t a grudging time. We love to go on the road less travelled, away from all the hustle and bustle of crowds. When we are in nature that is where we feel most connected to God. We are free from all the distractions that come with work, school, and life in general. During these adventures we feel so much more connected and present as a family.
So far, over various trips, we have travelled from the most southern tip of Tasmania right up the coast to Cook Town. All the hours on the road together have given us opportunities to connect as a family, to share our hopes and dreams, to discuss what we want for our family, what we value. It has taught us how to just be still and enjoy the nature around us, how to be more resilient when we have all had enough of being cooped up. These are the memories we hope will last a lifetime and will keep our family close.
We want our children to realise that there is a bigger world outside of their own four walls of comfort. We want them to learn to be grateful for the blessings they have and yet to also give freely to those less fortunate. When we travel, this allows them to have the opportunity to look out beyond themselves.
And so, we trundle…
